In the imaginary, the industrial is above all made of factory and men, a stage contended by management and workers. Devoted to Fiat Payrolls picks up the words of some female clerks who witness the office life during the 50s and 60s. Working time, working tools, the strict Taylor’s repetitiveness of tasks. And again, inspections inside and outside the factory; the hierarchical respect; the little rebellious acts; the feeling of invisibility compared to the true producers: workmen. And finally, for lots of them, cause or effect of a life wholly devoted to the Fiat, they remain “tote”, unmarried women. As the clerks of the pay office say: “It was a cloistered life, really: we were devoted to Fiat payrolls.”
