Started in 1987, the Video in the Villages project has introduced the video into native communities. Since 1997 it has been offering video courses and workshops in the villages to form the first generation of native documentary makers.

Born in Paris in 1953, Vincent Carelli moves to Brazil where he studies Social Sciences in São Paulo. In 1976 he starts working as a photographer and journalist for some newspapers and magazines such as Folha de São Paulo, Movimento and Coojornal. In these years he founds the Centro de Trabalho Indigenista and publishes A guerrilla do Araguaia. In 1987 he devises and starts the project Video in the Villages, enabling the natives to shoot their life by themselves. In the ‘90s he shoots many documentaries, which are awarded, including Free-for-all in Sararè (1992), Meeting Ancestors (1993), Video Cannibalism (1995), Jungle Secrets (1998), Indian on Tv (2000).

Mari Correa da Silva Rimaud, French-Brazilian, director, screenwriter and documentary editor, is coordinator of the “Video in the Villages” project, together with Vincent Carelli. She is in charge of the training workshops for native directors. For the project he has co-directed the documentaries AGENDA 31 (2002) and Video in the villages introduces itself (2000). In 1995-96 she directed the documentary Xingu, o Corpo e os Espíritos, awarded Best Documentary Prize at the Musée de l’Homme Ethnographic Film Festival in Paris.
