This film recounts the director’s return to his homeland, Algeria, after an absence of 30 years. Camera in hand, he follows pho- tographer Michael von Graffenried, who set out to find the Algerians he had photographed between 1991 and 2000 without them knowing it. he wants to look for those faces and to know the people shown in fine exhibitions, to understand the recent past of a country. A contradictory, complex look, reflection of a country where laughter and tears mix. A journey by images through the memories of a forgotten tragedy.
Born in Algiers, Mohammed Soudani, has been living in Switzerland since 1972; he has studied in Paris and in the United States, then he has worked as photography direc- tor in many films before turning to directing in 1989. In 1998 he won the Swiss Award as Best Film with Waalo Fendo, based on the problems of migrants in Milan.
