CinemAmbiente at Vico Canavese

During the whole month of august CinemAmbiente in cooperation with the library of Vico Canavese organizes the film exhibition "CinemAmbiente in Valchiusella". The films will be screened at the Salone Pluriuso (Regione Lime) - free entry. All the events will be introduced by Gaetano Capizzi and Debora Bocchiardo.

THE REAL DIRT ON FARMER JOHN by Taggart Siegel (USA 2005).

The jury of the international documentary section of Cinemambiente 2006 first of all congratulates the organizers on the high quality of the nine films selected, which made our job very difficult.
After a lively and wide-ranging discussion, we decided to award the prize to “The Real Dirt on Farmer John” by Taggart Siegel , a film full of humour and earthy wisdom which shows the ups and downs of several generations of a farming family in the American Mid-West, concluding on an inspiringly positive note.
Blending old home movies and archive footage, shot over fifty years, in a maverick visual language, the film tells Farmer John’s highly personal story with the same sort of unpredictable creativity that he has applied to his own life.

Special Mention to:

We Feed the World by Erwin Wagenhofer
a film which explores with a strong verbal and visual style the absurd contradictions between food production in our modern world in which industrial food has never been more plentiful (and tasteless) but in which hundreds of millions go hungry.

These two films exemplify two different approaches to environmental documentary film- making, namely narrative and polemical, both of which are necessary and have distinctive virtues.

:: CINEMAMBIENTE - PROVINCE OF TORINO STUDENTS PRIZE :::

ZDROJ/SOURCE by Martin Marecek (Cze 2005).

The jury has decided to award the Provincial Student Council special prize to Martin Marecek’s documentary Zdroj (Source) for the director’s ability to tackle controversial issues head on. Including an animated sequence and background music in the soundtrack was an apt stylistic choice that lent the film a sharp note of irony. The recording crew succeeded in establishing a direct relationship with a variety of witnesses, putting them at ease in front of the camera. The film kept our attention because, although it portrays a reality far different from our own, we were able to link the situation it describes with our daily life. It is one of the few documentaries that investigates the world of oil mining, a natural resource we sorely depend on yet take for granted.

DEVIL'S MINER by RICHARD LADKANI & KIEF DAVIDSON (Germany - USA 2004)

Was awarded because of the film’s compassion and originality that tug on the heart and the mind. Very little has changed, except for the world surrounding the small island of a mine and the latter-day slaves working in it. But a ray of hope emerges nonetheless: a compelling solidarity among those with nearly next to nothing yet manage to share what little the meagre prospects and resources can offer.

ITALIAN DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION

Le Navi Avvelenate by Vincenzo Pergolizzi
for its clear exposition of a highly topical issue that touches on such sensitive themes as the transport of toxic wastes from the rich to the poor countries, the lack of protection of workers’ rights, together with the courage the director showed in facing the potentially risky situations of making the film, as well as the film’s overall narrative quality.

Furriadroxus by Michele Mossa & Michele Trentini
Un Metro sotto i Pesci by M.Mellara & A.Rossi
for a narrative style that succinctly describes real-life situations, while capturing the pace of events and the lifestyles of characters, without heavy-handed interpretation.

Nani di Pietra Giganti di Carta by Fabio Gianotti and Silvia Bongiovanni
for encouraging young directors to explore original music and relationships with musicians as a basic element in creating an audiovisual film.

:: CINEMAMBIENTE - LEGAMBIENTE PRIZE :::

Mitumba - The Second-Hand Road by Raffaele Brunetti
In the jury’s opinion, the high quality of the competing documentaries marks the continued growth of the Cinemambiente Festival as its goes from strength to strength, attracting ever wider audiences.
Mitumba is an entertaining yet objective documentary characterized by attractive images, an excellent screenplay and a rhythm that advances the narrative of a T-shirt as a metaphor for the relationship between north and south. The documentary’s strength resides in its ability to make clear to non-environmentalists the implications the market has on the environment, while reminding environmentalists that the environment also has commercial ramifications.

Special Mention:
Le Navi Avvelenate by Vincenzo Pergolizzi
for a high quality reportage that reveals a compelling issue in environmental policies and public health in the Mediterranean. The film also underlines the conflicts of interest associated with the inclusion into the European Union of new countries.

Warning: Petroleum Pipeline by Jan van Nuenen
for the director’s use of irony and courage to depict environmental decay in a musical crescendo that hits the audience with a wham.

for the forceful message the young director gave in her first film.
